I really do think there are people who are subtext illiterate. My parents pretty much are. I don't think they would notice the HoYay unless Alex and Liv started making out onscreen, in which case it would cease to be HoYay and just become Yay!
Amen! My parents do see it sometimes, though. When I start giggling uncontrollably at the loverly HoYay (like at that Bug/Nigel scene in the sperm bank on Crossing Jordan) they look at me funny. My mum came in the room in the middle of that scene, and was like "What's going on?" and I was just "Hee hee hee!" :D
