Everybody go look at your toothpaste/soap/face wash/etc. Does it have Triclosan (also known as Irgasan and Microban) in it? Then you'll want to read this. (It's a PDF file, so right click+save as if that'll be easier for you.)

Basically, scientists are saying that when Triclosan is exposed to sunlight or mixes with the chlorine molecules in tap water, it produces a chlorinated dioxin, which can build up (even small amounts are deadly) and is linked with weakening of the immune system, decreased fertility, altered sex hormones, birth defects, and cancer. By itself, it's v. similar to estrogen, causing androgenic effects in fish, causes a hypothermic effect and depression of the central nervous system in mice, and high levels thereof were found in 3 out of 5 breast milk samples tested.

A poison, basically. I found the site after a mention in an article in Discover magazine (which, if you're not familiar with it, is a quite reputable scientific magazine)

Check out the list on that page of some of the products that contain it (socks?!) if you are so inclined, so that you can avoid said ingredient.

INORITE. Turns out that it's in at least the toothpaste that I use sometimes (we've got a bunch, and I sort of jump around, so not always), the face wash stuff I've been using for ages, two of the deoderants in my bathroom cabinet, and v. probably all the hand soaps. All of which touch tap water at some point, whether in the lathering process or taking a shower after using it. Gah.

Okay, it's not in any of our toothpastes, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, facial washes, hair removal cream (that stuff = win. I'm glad it won't poison me), or baby bath.

I can't be so sure about my socks, though. That is a terrifying thought. I've only just started expanding my collection! D:

Wow. Maybe it's more widespread in America. Or maybe you guys have banned it/regulated its use, like we should start.

hair removal cream

For srs? That kind of stuff always smelled so chemically that I was afraid to use it. And the way it makes the hair sort of shrivel up and get sticky before it wipes away, also scary.

And AHH socks. If they don't say "anti-microbial/bacterial/something", you're prolly fine. It's really just those and Fruit of the Loom that I've seen mentioned in my "OMG I'M GOING TO DIE" research.
