Blatant copypaste plus a whole lot of expansion from one of my rants in re: Irene Adler in the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie and the rumors that she'll be in the next series of BBC's Sherlock.

I ended up loving her in the movie just because Holmes fandom has so few strong women that it was a nice change (also, erm, latent femslasher here, so that was nice). But I'm worried when the RDJ!Holmes franchise comes back for movie two (that she's definitely going to be in), they'll have to take it further, just because Hollywood is incapable of leaving two unattached people still single at the end of a film. I did like the "Irene kind of has a crush on him, but Sherlock just wants to know //how she beat him omigod//", because that's totally right, but how long do you trust producers to not shove the leading man with the pretty woman, seriously? I really really really hope they resist, but judging by every other movie in history....

From what Moffat and Gatiss have done so far in sticking more or less to canon when they do throw in references (as with Stamford and all), I'm hopeful she'll only stick around one episode. Most of my worry comes from the fact that I don't think we can name one decent female character in the show. Mrs Hudson, maybe, though she's kind of a broken record ("Not your housekeeper" but does it anyway--girl needs to stand up and say JFC HOLMES NO MORE INTESTINES DELIVERED TO THE DOORSTEP). Harry is a drunk who presumably drove her wife away, Molly has been portrayed as clueless and ditsy, Anthea is so glued to her phone she can't even pay attention to her boss giving her instructions (that part was just strange to me).

Basically, in Sherlock, I want Irene to be awesome and yet TPTB not fall for the must-be-romance trap, which might be too much to wish for (especially since they've never explicitly gone any particular direction with Sherlock's sexual identity). I think BBC is less "MUST PAIR TOGETHER" than American TV, but I am paranoid nonetheless. I have a feeling we'll get one or the other.

But frankly, I don't like how bros before hos BBC Sherlock is. I mean, because Sherlock/John is one of my few hardcore, inviolable OTPs, I fall into the trap as well, which I hatehatehate, so I think it needs some decent female characters like breathing (or to expand on the ones we have a bit, which would be better--Molly is my current favorite to try with simply because JFC, could they make her any more lame? Her blog is pink and flowers and kittens--even in the tie-in media, they lamed her up). So yes. I'm not used to my pairing possibilities lasting more than a little while before some other romance comes in and screws it up, which is undoubtedly why I'm concerned and most others probably aren't, but the more I think about it, the more I think I can trust the main two just from the few things I've heard about them/seen them do before. Still, it's one of those things I'm not going to let myself assume will happen because I'll be even more disappointed when it doesn't.

TL;DR -- next series of Sherlock needs kickass Irene if any Irene, but to keep Sherlock gay.
