You should totally look up Downey's acceptance speech if you're so inclined. It was rather hilarious. Gervais did a decent job hosting as well, I think, though I didn't catch his monologue. He made a good many of the introducing-the-presenters bits not boring ("I like a drink as much as the next man... unless the next man is Mel Gibson" when, obvs, it was).
In all, only a few of "my things" won (I was rooting pretty hard against Avatar because I feel like everybody's just jumping on the bandwagon and giving that everything because it's made so much money) and I had the TV on mute most of the time unless I had a favorite in whatever category was up, LOL. Pretty dresses and sharp suits are all it's good for IMO, but that's good enough for me.
Be thankful that you didn't watch in at least one regard, though: since there are only what, five categories (okay, more, but still), everybody gets what felt like 15 minutes per acceptance speech. One of the ensemble cast winners took ages getting everybody up on stage and then just kept talking through more of the "get off the stage" music than I think I've ever heard on any awards show ever. Of course, I wouldn't be complaining as much if any of the ones that took more than the requisite 45 seconds were ones I rooted for. ;)
